A surprising BIG benefit of broccoli!

I must admit, I have an addiction - of signing up for too many blogs/ezines/emails about health! But, one of my New Year's Resolution is to SHARE my favorite findings with you, I promise not to be selfish and keep all of the good stuff to myself. lol

The older that I get, the more that I realize, how important that it is to eat properly - and to "try" to alleviate the sugar and "processed boxed" foods out of my family's diet... but it is hard!  I ran across this article in my inbox from "Shape" magazine....  hope this helps give you some motivation to try to fit a few of these foods into your every day life...(Stay tuned for more foods)

BROCCOLI fights wrinkle
EAT YOUR BROCCOLI!  I am thankful and lucky that my family loves Broccoli, but after reading this, I just might have to eat broccoli every day!   I know that this Green is one of the toughest powerhouses around in the Veggie World. But did you know that 1 cup gives you 100% of Vitamin C?  And it gets BETTER FOR THE LADIES! Vitamin C is crucial for the production of Collagen for the skin! :) Yes! Here is how it works - Vitamin C = production of Collagen = skin elasticity.  Another benefit?  Broccoli also contains beta carotene - here is the formula - Beta Carotene = Vitamin A = Natural skin cells turning over = BEAUTIFUL SKIN

So there yah go!  No Botox required!! I guess that I am going to have to stock up on my broccoli - how about you?

What is your "Sweet Spot"

Hi all! I guess that I am in a  "motivational" mode this week, but I think that we need it every now and then, don't you agree?  With our fan base growing with peeps who kicking their "butts", I think that it is appropriate..  Alot of you know that I am a runner, work out, and am getting my golf game back on! (yeahh!!) and this is probably where I came up with the "Sweet Spot" for my blog. lol..  But I was thinking that we all have our "different" sweet spots, that help us to stay on the right path to good mental  and physical health.

I don't know about you but when I don't run or do the things that I know are good for me, I feel like I am "losing" control (not in an anal way), but that I am falling into a bad trap! lol..  away from my good habits. I just feel so OUT OF SYNC and I find myself taking it out on people, and especially myself.

Heck, we are on the battle field daily, trying to chose the right decisions and actions for ourselves. What is ironic is that when we do the "right" thing, like get off of the couch to walk the dog, not eat that pint of icecream, sneak a cig, lol.. we do feel like we... "Hit the Sweet Spot!"..

I dont know if any of you are golfers, baseball, basketball players, etc. but you how you feel when you hear that"ball" just sound perfect when you hit it, or the ball hits the net perfectly, or even walking the dog.. you got past that "point" when your breathing is easier and you can go longer! When you went 7 days with out a cig, or even maybe reading a book, playing with your kids, treating your spouse better, learning something new, whatever it is,,  to get you back in control of you... hitting the "Sweet Spot".

With this in mind, no matter what your daily battle is when you know how "GOOD" that you feel that you hit your "Sweet Spot" for the day, this is my gift to you, pretend to wear this charm as a daily reminder.  Even if you do not workout, we all have something that we know to work on or  stay away from to help us lead a healthier life. I would love to hear what your "sweet spot" is! :))) (nothing dirty!lol)

Tonight I am going to my golf lesson to brush up on my game, and man do I LOVE to hear the ball hitting the Sweet Spot! :),  just remember that sound :).  And make sure to always give yourself credit and give yourself a pat on the back! An idea is to have a calendar to put a smiley face on when you do hit the "sweet spot".. :) It will give you motivation to continue! :))

Can't wait to hear from you about your daily battle and what you do over come it? Don't forget to check out "Golf 4 Her", the ad to the side of my blog .. what a fabulous way to reward yourself! :))

Chow bella ! :)))

Reconciliation for the body and soul

Hello everyone! I know that this  topic does not have a lot of impact on helping people to kick the habit... lol, well maybe it does.. Stress and anxiety do cause people to smoke, so maybe I am on to something! Eureka! But I do believe that "healthy" minds and spirits do contribute to a  happy and good life.  Which ultimately, can help you to stay away from those nasty health ailments and habits.

When you are going through something in your life that negatively affects your well being, it can be like a monkey on your back!  No matter how positive that you try to be, the stress definitely puts a toll on your body and soul.  One of these monkeys happened to jump onto my back, and left me to ponder my situation;  when, how,  and even, should I reconcile?  I think that we all go through times in our life when someone that we love or are very close to, basically, stabs us in the heart and or back. Ever been there? Yep, not a good feeling, and no matter how much you try to get yourself to think, "get over it, move on, he or she isn't worth it..", it still hurts and you suffer.. You get the pic?

The older I get, the more that I think that I am getting wiser, and not to be so naive., and that is okay stick up for myself and what I believe in. If my feelings are hurt, then hey, I have a right to say so.  I have no regret in making the right choices for myself and knowing what battles to fight.  But how and when do you make amends and move on, once your heart has been broken?

And then, when you are searching for an answer, it appears out of no where! Have you ever heard of serendipity? Well, I had my dose of it yesterday;  I happened to open up a book that I haven't read yet, and guess what page that I turned to?  Yep, you got it.. "Reconciliation!" Could it be a sign? lol.

The difficult thing about reconciliation is that I am not a confrontational person, and hate it! But I did stick up for myself and do not regret it,, but is the underlying "stress" and "hurt" affecting my well being? Probably!

With this in mind, I love this quote that I read yesterday. "Two men can meet quicker than two mountains ever will".  Sometimes when we have falling out with someone, reconciliation seems worlds apart and our pride gets in the way..  and the hurt....so what is better? If you are like me, you are probably pretty much an easy going person, and feels guilty when you express how you really feel, or to avoid confrontation, to go along with the other person. Easier to swallow your pride then to subject to it?  But then the guilt and knowing that you are actually "cheating yourself", by not getting the cards onto the table.. and who knows where this can lead!

Thank God for Father Butters, he gave me the okay to feel what I was feeling and to handle the situation the way that I was. When I went to Reconciliation this Easter Season, my priest told me that it is okay that when people hurt you, that you do not have to have the same loving feelings as you did before, but you can be cordial, until your heart mends.. And, that sometimes it is a good lesson to someone to give them a consequence, not out of spite or anger, but yes, you were hurt..  you can still forgive them, but you don't have to go out of your way for them.

So, yes, our pride is at stake, but although we try to forget about our hurt and go on with our daily duties,  deep down, boy does it eat away at you! This can cause stress and anxiety, which can lead to heart disease, and other bad things!

Guess that when someone hurts us, we have to think, okay, who and what is more important?  YOU AND YOUR HEALTH! So, I think that if you are at peace with yourself and know that you did the best that you could have done to try to "reconcile", and that did not work, but now the person is trying to reconcile, but you are not ready.. that is okay! :),,  I have learned that you can still over time get back to where you may have been before with this person, but on "your" terms, not theirs. You know what I am talking about, I don't know if it is because I am getting older, but I hear a voice inside of me, and am just going with it..  Nope, it isn't time to make a 100% reconciliation, but I will take the first step, and see where that leads me..

It doesn't mean that I am being prude, rude, stubborn, but maybe it is better for our well being to resolve issues when our body and soul are ready.. And that puts a message out there that you are not a person of whom can be easily taken advantage of.. I have learned that you can do this with grace, dignity, and in the long run, may eventually lead to a much better relationship,,, more trusting and you both have more respect for each other.  Maybe it is because  you have expressed how you feel non-verbally and on your own terms. kind of like Mother Nature stepping in. That is PRIDE!:)

Hope that this will help you, because I know that at one time or another, we all will have a monkey on our back. Life is too short :))  It is okay to take a "cool" off period and not "jump" back into the friendship/relationship on someone's terms or right away.  Like my idol, Jim Morrisson, says, "Take it easy baby, love real slow, take it as it comes".. I like those words, take it one day at a time, and reconcile slowly to build the trust again and... to help you get that monkey off of your back!

Love yah guys! :))))) Would love to hear from you, how did you handle your monkey on your back?

Make sure to look out for those "serendipity" moments, they tend to happen when we need them the most in our lives. :)

Stay healthy!  And don't forget to take a look at the "Golf4Her" link below, very cool clothes for the golfer!_

Salmon for fine lines???? Applying pomegrantes topically?

 YUMMY Salmon for the skin

I have talked about fish before and how important that it is, and I am trying to spread the word as to how salmon can benefit you much more than just a "good for your heart" food.  MMM, what would you think if I told you that you could also help to minimize lines on your beautiful face?  YEPPERS! IT is true!

Salmon contains astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity, so you'll have fewer fine lines.

For a great recipe,  visit our FB page @ laser point health services. :)

Secret weapon #2

Ooohh, it looks so good, doesn't it?  I know that Pomegranates are one of the highest source of antioxidants, but never in my wild dreams, would I think to apply topically?  Guess it makes sense though, why not deliver this powerhouse topically? This beauty  may help increase collagen in our skin, therefore, YOUNGER looking skin!

Secret weapon #3

Yep, cannot give Green Tea the credit that it deserves!  It seems as though that every time that I read an article.. green tea is highly recommended! So, on that note,  here we go again.. the rave of Green Tea...  drink 4 cups of tea a day to get the benefits of polyphenols.  As I am blogging and watch Dr. Oz (love him), he also said that by drinking 4 cups a day of Green Tea, it can help decrease your chances of strokes.

The great thing about these natural, healthy, and inexpensive foods is that they are not a designer item that you have to spend hundreds of dollars on.  Secondly, my Mom is a Stage 3 Breast Cancer survivor, and her oncologist is very strong about eating organic foods (especially meats and fruits) and she is very strong about not using products with "parabens".. which may cause breast cancer.  This ingredient is found in practically every item that we use daily.  Especially in skin care, lotions, cosmetics, shampoos, etc.

So in a nutshell nature girls,  put down on your grocery list,,, salmon (lots of it!), green tea, and pomegranates! My workout of the week is still in progress; as we were on Spring Break and getting back to my routine!

Do you have any skin care secrets?  Would love to hear from yah! Share!

Have a beautiful day! Be healthy,, and pass it on to our kids!

Just ONE benefit of drinking H20

MMMM, do you ever have those days that you crave a nice cold glass of agua?  We all know that water is good for us and read about the benefits, as we shake our heads, yes we know..  but where is my Diet Coke, Iced Tea, or Latte? Did you know that the last thing before the French go to bed and the first thing that they do when they wake up is.... drink a BIG GLASS OF WATER!  The main reason is because the water increases your metabolism, not the cup of coffee that we desperately grab for in the morning.

So, while I am sitting here in our hotel room, I have had a cup of tea and now coffee, but I am still thirsty!!  Yep, I need to go downstairs and just skip my "iced tea" and buy some water!

Did you know that your brain  CANNOT differentiate between hunger and thirst?  So, grab the water! If you were to increase your daily intake of agua to 1.5 liters, you would increase your metabolism and burn an extra 17,400 calories,, and that is a whopping 5 pounds!! When you drink water, it will increase your metabolism by 30% within 30-40 minutes!  Bring it on!!!

There are tons of benefits of why drinking is soo good for us, and I will share a tip here and there with you, but today I thought that was pretty cool,, wow!

Why agua is soo important!

Holy smokes! Although I am always drinking hot and iced tea, but  I guess that I should try to drink more "water".??? How many glasses do you drink a day?  Stay tuned for our next water session, when I will give you skinny on how drinking water will do miracles for yah and WHY it is so important to use those lemons!!!

Do you have any secrets that you use to combat the water blues?  Do you add anything special? Like cucumbers, strawberries??  Would love to hear from yah!! So grab your water...  :), I am !!!

Ant Poison, Rocket Fuel, Vinyl Cholride in a Cig?

Did you know that every time that you 'light up" you inhale about 4,000 chemicals?  Yeppers, 4,000 whopping POISONOUS chemicals!  The main culprit is the nicotine, as we know, and is what makes people go CRAZY in the morning without it.  To be honest with you, I think that maybe one of the reasons that people are afraid to quit is because they are fearful that they cannot live without the nicotine?

So, here is a run down of "SOME" OF THE CHEMICALS ---

Arsenic -- Ant Poison
Benzene
Hydrazide - Rocket Fuel
Formaldehyde -  Frog and Body Preservative
Tar
Vinyl Chloride - Rubber Raft
Urethane - Wood Sealant
Lead -  Nuclear Waste
Cadmium - Car Batteries
Nickel - Pennies
Polnium -Radio Active
Actaldehde - Solvent
Cyanide - Rat Poison, used in "gas chambers"
Ammonia - Floor Cleaner
Acetone - Nail Polish Remover
Cairon -- Car Exhaust
Butane - Lighter Fluid
Towene - Industrial Solvent
Hexamine - Barbecue Lighter
Stemic Acid - Candle Wax

THOSE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE DANGEROUS CHEMICALS!
Now since I probably freaked you out, (Sorry),, but it is for your own good! lol ;))). I want you to be around for a LONG TIME WITH GOOD HEALTH! So, you are probably thinking, okay, I need to quit, but where do I even start?  That is easy my friend!  Enroll today in our "Kick Butt" Bootcamp! Have a pup? If not, borrow one! Get out and burn those calories for the both of you!

AWWW, He is sooo cute!  Our family has had three pups and sadly, Bear and Dodger have gone to doggie heaven, but we still have Teddy, our Yorkie:). It is so amazing with pets, it doesn't take much to please them. I also noticed that whenever I would put my shoes to go for a run, Bear and Dodger would get SO excited, because they knew that they were going to take a walk when I came home!  And now.. Teddy goes crazy! lol.  I almost feel bad not walking him first and then go for a run,   because he is soo excited and I feel like I am breaking his heart.

I usually take Teddy for a little walk after my run, and it is good for the both of us.  For me, it is good because I can "cool" down and walk it out after my run.  But the other day, I was thinking, okay.. I know that I burn about 80 calories per mile when I run, so when I walk Teddy for about 20 minutes, that is about a mile (he stops at every bush, lol)... so maybe I burn about 60-80?  Have to use my Nike Chip to find out..
But I realized, a pound is 3,600 calories of energy, right? So if you were to walk EVERY DAY, 30 days x 80 calories - 2400 calories burnt..  and if you were to not drink maybe one glass of pop, that extra handful of chips, extra scoop of icecream, etc..  that would be about a minimum of a deficit of 100 calories per day x 30 = 3,000, geeze! That is a total deficit of 5400 calories!!

WOW! It is so amazing what can happen when you keep track of what you are putting into your mouth, it adds up!  So get out there, it is good for you and your pup!  They will love you and they need it too!  The best is after dinner, because who likes being full, and then headed for the couch?  NOT I SAID THE FLY!
Even if you walked your pup 10 minutes in the morning and 10 at night, same difference!  If you don't have a pup, I bet that your neighbor would be soo happy if you would volunteer to take their little bundle of joy for a walk! So get out there!

I can't wait to hear about how you did! Just a little effort every day goes a long way and forms good habits :).  Great for the family too!  View it, pass it on, and let's get healthy!

Two More Great Snacks of the Week!

When you need ENERGY

MMM, I wanted to make this picture bigger because it looks sooo delicious!  We all have those days when we are just plain running ragged and feel like we need a shot of something.. Our body is craving sugar,, mmm, that chocolate cookie, snickers, etc.. But the BEST thing that you can do for yourself is to grab a "handful" of trail mix.

Raisins provide potassium, the nuts provide protein,, and... magnesium.  Did you know that when you workout strenuously, you lose magnesium and the body will therefore produce "lactic" acid. This ultimately will bring on muscle soreness. But if you eat nuts, the magnesium will help increase your metabolism and help the "nerve" function of your body. So when your body is on empty, and you lose magnesium, it is the same affect of "working out".. so get that trail mix!

Planters makes a healthy mix of 5 snack bags in a box.. LOVE IT!  It is Heart Smart, and usually just 1/2 of a bag helps me :)

What NOT to do!

Starbucks, Mc Cafe, Tim Hortons,  I know IT IS SO TEMPTING to treat yourself!  No matter why Starbucks sells "Expresso Shots"!  We are such suckers, lol.. but when the fuel tank is on E, which sounds better? lol...  Instead of grabbing that Latte or Expresso, try the Trail Mix!
When you have one of these bad boys,, you are putting at least 15 grams of sugar into your body.  As we know, yep, you will feel great,, then..... CRASHHH. And a few hundred calories later..

Hope that you enjoyed these tips today!  You can still treat yourself to your "expresso", but why not "treat" yourself when you are feeling great..then you can really enjoy it, like the Italians and French do. NO CLOCK TICKING and TELLING YOU WHERE YOU NEED TO BE!:))

Merci, and talk to yah tomorrow!  Would love to hear what "healthy" snack picks you up!

Foods to Help you "destress" and increase" your metabolism

Foods When You Are Stressed

When you are stressed, it is best to eat 1 cup of yogurt with a handful of nuts.. why?  Yogurt provides "lysine" and nuts provide "arginine".

What NOT to do....

WE all love a Coke here and there;  but when we are under stress, research has found that if you drink more than 20 ounces of soda a day, you are three times more times likely to be depressed and anxious, compared with those who drink less.

 Want to Increase Your Metabolism?

We all know that green tea is one of the best teas to drink to receive the benefits of "powerful" antioxidants".. but did you know that if you drink more than 690 mg per day, you may have a smaller waistline and lower BMI?  How you ask? Green Tea is full of one of the most powerful antioxidants, catechin.  This powerful ingredient will set your metabolism on fire!!

WHAT NOT TO DO>> EAT NOTHING!

Yeppers, although, we think, oh, we are so disciplined, and do not have to eat a thang... honey child..  got news for yah!  If you "starve" yourself, your body will naturally go into "survival mode" and will SLOW down your metabolism Therefore, you will NOT lose anything.. You need to rev up your metabolism with proteins and have a mini snack throughout the day..  Yogurt and nuts mid morning, and a boiled egg, or my fav. hummus and a veggie for a protein packed snack in the afternoon.

Looks good!!! mmm, I think that I need to go to the store and stock up on yogurt, nuts, green tea, eggs, hummus and veggies! Want to join me??

Hope these help you, I have more tips for you this week!  Remember, exercising, eating right, are all apart of a making small changes in your lifestyle,, nothing to hard :)..  If you a smoker and want to quit,, we would love to help you quit!  You are SOO worth it!  Stay tuned for more tips for you smokers!

Let me know if you have a fav hummus!

Let's Begin Our Journey

Today is the first day of our journey on our challenge to become fit and healthy! Even if running isn't your bag , that is okay.  Let's find something else that you love to do:)   Exercise has to be FUN or you just won't do it!  You have to think, this is my "20 minutes" or "hour",  this time is reserved for me!

First, you need to decide WHEN you are going to "treat" yourself :), get your calendar and SCHEDULE it!  If you have a neighbor who wants to join you, than more power to you.  Trust me, there are days when I don't want to get out there, but I know that I will feel much better when I do.

Did you know that when I was training for my Marathon, I read that peeps don't have an issue with training and increasing their mileage, it is the "getting out the door" syndrome.  Like, you know, I will just put one more load of laundry in, cut the grass, vacuum,. Guess what peeps?  IT WILL ALL BE THERE WAITING FOR YOU WHEN YOU GET BACK,  IT ISN"T GOING ANYWHERE! BUT YOU ARE! :)))

Secondly, let's talk about your gear..  running and exercising is pretty simple and doesn't require a big investment.  However, I do highly recommend a good pair of running shoes and the Nike Plus Chip as shown above.  If you have an Ipod, Itouch, or IPhone (the 3G is not compatable), YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS CHIP!  It is only 28.00 (see the Amazon ad below).  You put the chip into any pair of Nike Plus shoes and you are good to go.  If you do not wear Nike, , you can purchase a lace lid. (See the ad). I cannot run without this!

You can tell the program what your goal is; calories, distance, time, etc.  Then while you are running, it will talk to you. When you are finished, the program will tell you your distance, calories burnt, average mile, and total time.  Once you download the info on line, you keep track of your progress.. and it is soo cool!  So far, I have burnt 30,000 calories and have ran across the country 1/2 way since I have my chip. Pretty amazing! You can also compete against other people in challenges, it gives you motivation.

Okay, so you have your "appointment" with yourself and the road, gym, or your preference of exercise.  You also have your shoes, Nike Chip, and gear,,,  So, let's get going!  IF you are TOTALLY new to exercise, let's take it slow so you won't over do it.  With running, let's start and have a goal of running and walking up to 2 miles.  Once you can run the entire 2 miles without walking, then you are ready to increase your mileage.

A good rule of thumb to help prevent injuries is to never increase your mileage more than 10%.  Unless, you are training :)..

Let's hit it!  Don't forget to reward yourself, by putting a sticker, star, or happy face on your calendar..  no matter what you do, give yourself a pat on the back.. because you did it!

If you would like to take our smoking cessation, weight manangement, or nutrition classes, make check out our www.faceboook.com/LaserPointHealthServices or talk to me and I will share more with you.  Follow me on Twitter!

Post on FB how you did!!!  Now go out and burn some rubber!

Who is the first brave soul to take on the challenge of getting into shape?

 MILE 23!

Welcome to our first blog with our goal of bringing good health to you and your family everyday!  We are here for you to help you quit smoking, achieve better nutrition and maintain weight management.  How you ask?  First, by giving you little tidbits to help you make the healthy changes in your lifestyle.   Secondly, for those of you who want the "meat and potatoes" and need the extra coaching, we can help you by taking our Kick Butt Bootcamp Smoking Cessation, Nutrition, and Weight Management programs.  Just let us know!

As you can see, I posted a pic of myself, running my first Marathon last May!  This was at Mile 23! This is a perfect example of how much that our mind and body can stretch and achieve what we may have thought was impossible!  But let me tell yah, I have been running for 30 years, but never ran a Marathon.  Half Marathon, yes, but this was a goal that I have ALWAYS wanted to achieve, but was scared of not finishing.  A few of my brave neighbors joined me, and we began our journey. It took dedication, discipline, and desire.  Every Sunday for 4 months, we would hit the trails; following a Marathon training schedule.  It was brutal at times, and we had to focus.  There were times we didn't go out the night before, cut down on our "bad habits", we sacrificed!  But the result, was so incredible and I feel as though I achieved a milestone in my life.  At 40 years old, I did it!!!! The best part, I qualified for the Boston at 3:47...

I have ran 2 Half Marathons recently, and my times are even better!  When you commit to yourself and know that it will payoff, your desire will kick in! Running isn't for everyone, but man, it sure gets your body in shape.  It changes everything about you and your mindset.  If you start out with a proper plan, you can do whatever you want ! And it is free!  No club memberships, the only cost,  shoes.  You can run wherever you want!

Running, yes, is a major part of my life, and always will be.  When I lived in MI, I still ran all winter, and it felt GREAT! You just have to wear the right "gear". My intent is not to to "brag" about me and my race times, but I hope that I can instill a little bit of desire within you to find your own goal... what is it? And how can I help you?

This last week, I have had two friends ask me for their help, they want to get out there, but are "frozen".. I don't think that it is an issue of being "lazy", I think that sometimes as peeps we overanalyze?  Instead of just "doing it" as Nike says, we worry, and have high expectations of ourselves... and are afraid of failing.  What holds you back?

So, I thought that because bikini season is right around the corner, why not offer a "challenge" for those of you who want to start running, exercise, eat better, quit smoking, etc.   Our face book page is so awesome, and it is designed to be there for you!  Ask questions, crow about yourself, share, let's cheer each other on with our health goals.

You have nothing to lose, but the old "unhealthy" you!  It is the "daily healthy habits" that you incorporate into your life that will make the change and you can pass that on to your family.  When you feel good about you, you are a better spouse, parent, daughter, son, sibling, friend,, etc, You get the picture right?

Can't wait to hear all about your goals and who wants to take on the challenge. Even if you have never stepped foot in a pair of running shoes.. talk to us! Who is the first brave soul???
